Hardwood floors are beautiful – and surprisingly easy to ruin with the wrong cleaning method.
The most common mistake: too much water. Excess moisture warps and stains hardwood over time.
The right approach:
- Sweep or vacuum first to remove grit – dragging dirt across wood scratches the finish.
- Use a barely-damp mop (wrung out thoroughly) with a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner.
- Work with the grain, not against it.
- Dry the floor immediately with a clean cloth if any puddles form.
Avoid steam mops, bleach, and vinegar – all three damage hardwood finishes over time. A quick daily sweep prevents the buildup that causes real damage.
