Dusty light fixtures dim the light in a room more than most people realize – and cleaning them is simpler than it looks.

  1. Turn off the light and let bulbs cool completely before touching anything.
  2. For glass shades or globes: remove them and wash in warm soapy water. Dry thoroughly before reinstalling – moisture near bulbs is a safety hazard.
  3. For recessed lights and track lighting: use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the trim ring and inside the can. A clean paintbrush gets dust out of crevices without scratching.
  4. For chandeliers: spray a cloth with glass cleaner (not the fixture itself) and wipe each crystal or arm individually.

Put a drop cloth on the floor first – dust and debris fall as you work, and catching it saves you from cleaning the floor twice.
