A kitchen sponge can harbor more bacteria than a toilet seat if not sanitized regularly.
Daily options (choose one):
- Microwave: Wet the sponge thoroughly, microwave for 1 minute on high. Let cool before touching – it will be very hot.
- Dishwasher: Place on the top rack and run with the heated dry cycle.
- Bleach soak: 1 tablespoon bleach per cup of water, soak for 1 to 2 minutes, rinse well.
Replace sponges every 1 to 2 weeks regardless. A sponge that smells bad even when clean is past its useful life.
