One-sentence answer: The kitchen is the hardest room in the house to keep truly clean – but a systematic room-by-room approach turns a daunting task into a manageable two-hour project.

Most people wipe down kitchen surfaces regularly. Far fewer ever do a true deep clean – the kind that gets behind the stove, inside the refrigerator, above the cabinets, and under the sink. Over time, without periodic deep cleaning, kitchens accumulate grease, bacteria, and odors that routine maintenance simply cannot address.

Here’s a systematic approach that actually gets it done.

Start From the Top

Always clean top to bottom so debris falls to surfaces you haven’t cleaned yet.

Ceiling and upper cabinets: Wipe the tops of upper cabinets – they accumulate a sticky layer of grease and dust that most people never see. A degreaser spray and a microfiber cloth handle this quickly. While you’re up there, check for anything stored that’s expired or unused.

Light fixtures: Remove any glass covers and wash them in the sink. Wipe bulbs when cool.

Work Through the Appliances

Refrigerator: Remove everything. Toss expired items. Pull out shelves and drawers and wash them in warm soapy water. Wipe interior walls with a baking soda and water solution. Clean the door gasket – mold grows there. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils if accessible.

Oven: Use the self-clean cycle if your oven has one, or apply a commercial oven cleaner and let it sit overnight. Wipe racks separately in the sink with dish soap and a scrubber.

Microwave: Steam clean with a bowl of water and lemon for 5 minutes, then wipe clean. Clean the exterior and top.

Cabinets and Drawers

Empty each cabinet and drawer completely. Wipe interior surfaces. Check expiration dates on pantry items. Clean the exterior cabinet fronts with a degreaser appropriate for your cabinet finish – this is where grease from cooking accumulates most visibly over time.

Counters, Sink, and Backsplash

Clear everything off the counters completely before cleaning. Wipe down all surfaces with a disinfecting cleaner. Scrub the sink with baking soda – don’t forget the faucet base and handles where buildup is worst. Clean the backsplash with a degreaser, paying attention to the area directly behind the stove.

Floors Last

Pull out the stove and refrigerator if possible and clean behind and under them. Sweep, then mop with a floor cleaner appropriate for your surface. Don’t forget the baseboards.

A thorough kitchen deep clean done quarterly keeps the room genuinely clean year-round – and makes the weekly wipe-down take a fraction of the time it would otherwise require.
