The golden rule of carpet stains: act immediately, and blot – never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers and spreads it wider.

For most fresh stains:

  1. Blot up as much liquid as possible with a clean white cloth.
  2. Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap with 1 cup cold water.
  3. Apply small amounts and blot from the outside edge toward the center.
  4. Rinse by blotting with plain cold water, then blot dry.

For tougher stains like red wine or pet accidents, add a splash of white vinegar to the solution. For grease, sprinkle baking soda first, let it sit 15 minutes, then vacuum before applying the soap solution.

Cold water only – hot water sets protein-based stains like blood and milk permanently.
