Microfiber cloths are the most effective cleaning tool you own – but only if you wash them correctly. Wash them wrong and they stop working entirely.
The right way:
- Wash microfiber cloths separately from cotton towels and clothing – cotton lint clogs the fibers.
- Use a small amount of plain liquid detergent. No fabric softener – it coats the fibers and kills their ability to trap dust and bacteria.
- Wash on warm, not hot. High heat melts the synthetic fibers over time.
- Air dry or tumble dry on low with no dryer sheets.
A well-cared-for microfiber cloth can be washed and reused hundreds of times.
When a microfiber cloth stops picking up dust and starts just pushing it around, it’s time to replace it – no amount of washing will restore it at that point.
