The golden rule of carpet stains: act immediately, and blot – never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers and spreads it wider.
For most fresh stains:
- Blot up as much liquid as possible with a clean white cloth.
- Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap with 1 cup cold water.
- Apply small amounts and blot from the outside edge toward the center.
- Rinse by blotting with plain cold water, then blot dry.
For tougher stains like red wine or pet accidents, add a splash of white vinegar to the solution. For grease, sprinkle baking soda first, let it sit 15 minutes, then vacuum before applying the soap solution.
Cold water only – hot water sets protein-based stains like blood and milk permanently.
